Due to the expected impact of the winter storm, all Virginia State Park overnight facilities will be closed from Friday, Jan. 23 through Tuesday, Jan. 27. This decision is based on the forecast for unsafe conditions and potential power outages. For updates click here.

A parade of park rangers ushers in Virginia’s 75th governor

As part of the many traditional activities surrounding Virginia’s gubernatorial inauguration on January 16, a parade with local organizations and bands was held. Included in that procession this year were 29 of Virginia State Parks’ dedicated rangers. Additionally, DCR’s Office of Public Safety & Law Enforcement supported the Division of Capitol Police and coordinated with other peer agencies to assist in providing security for the event.

Braving wet, cold weather, many across the commonwealth gathered in Capital Square on Saturday to witness Governor Abigail Spanberger take the oath of office. Following this ceremony, a 20-minute parade marched by the South Portico of the Virginia State Capitol Building, where the governor, Cabinet secretaries and others were seated.

"DCR’s Law Enforcement Rangers were honored to support the safety and security of Virginia’s 75th gubernatorial inauguration," said Chief of DCR Public Safety and Law Enforcement Scott Vantrease. "I’m grateful for every professional, both visible and behind the scenes, whose dedication ensured a safe event for all. My thanks also go to the entire DCR team, whose tireless commitment protects our employees, guests and the resources entrusted to us every day.”

DCR Law Enforcement Officer assisted with security operation throughout the day.

Ranger Parker Redfox, Virginia State Parks’ mascot, led the way as park rangers followed, donning their dress uniforms. Additionally, DCR law enforcement officers provided security along the parade route. As they passed the portico, Virginia State Parks was announced, and its 90 years of diverse beauty and abundant amenities were recognized. Participating staff, including park managers, maintenance rangers, law enforcement rangers, visitor experience specialists and more, represented many of those parks from Machicomoco State Park on the York River to Fairy Stone State Park in southwestern Virginia.

“It was not only an honor,” said Eastern Field Operations Manager Tim Shrader, “but a great opportunity for the Department of Conservation and Recreation to introduce our state parks to a new administration within minutes of the transition.”

Cheers and compliments poured in from the audience, and many were seen taking pictures with the rangers and Parker Redfox. To join in celebrating Virginia’s beautiful public lands and those who help make it possible, visit a state park near you. Learn more at virginiastateparks.gov.
