DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Generally applications must be made through the RMS (electronic state application). We will, however, accept paper applications for some state park slots. Be sure to refer to the individual recruitment for specific requirements.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.  

​​Leesylvania State Park is accepting applications for an ​Administrative Assistant​ position. 

Job Summary: 

​​We are seeking individuals who are self-motivated and outgoing to assist park management with the administrative functions of a state park operation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • ​​Operating a cash register
  • Responding to customer requests in-person, by phone, or by email
  • Provide detailed information on camping, boat storage, park fees, directions, pricing, annual passes, special events, and local area information
  • Reconciling revenue for cash registers; preparing cash and check revenue deposits; entering revenue data into respective software
  • Scheduling, training, and assigning daily duties to contact rangers
  • Maintaining accurate and neat filing and storage
  • Procuring goods and services
  • Managing Park records
  • Processing invoices for payment
  • Performing general office administration duties as assigned
  • Ensures workspace, front desk, and other customer contact areas are neat and clean.
  • Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of records and sensitive information.
  • Support special projects, events, and programs as needed.

Flexible availability to work 16 to 32 hours per week, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • ​​Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented work ethic, providing excellent customer service to internal and external individuals, self-motivated with the ability to work independently to complete multiple tasks with little to no supervision, as well as being a cooperative contributor within a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience performing typical administrative office support using Microsoft Office Suite software and the ability to operate a variety of office equipment.  
  • Experience in providing customer service and maintaining positive public support.
  • Consistently meets deadlines and prioritizes daily duties while demonstrating flexibility with addressing unexpected, urgent assignments. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone, in writing, and via electronic methods.  
  • Experience with cash handling and operating a cash register, including daily reconciliation of the register.

Additional Considerations: 

  • Experience providing administrative support and knowledge of the park is desirable. 
  • Prior knowledge and experience in cash management procedures, and knowledge of state procurement policies.   
  • Prior work experience working in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Knowledge and experience in business, computer, and office services related practices and procedures.  

Special Instructions: 

  • Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check. 
  • Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify. 
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business. 
  • Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

  • Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks. 
  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as: 
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.  
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. 
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights.  All reservations require a two-night minimum.  Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
