First Day Hike: Winter Tree ID Walk

Start the new year with a refreshing walk through the quiet beauty of Douthat’s winter woods. Join Master Naturalist Kim Manion for a short, guided hike focused on the fascinating world of winter tree identification. With the leaves gone, it’s the perfect time to learn how to recognize trees by their bark texture, bud shape, and branching patterns—skills that might just change the way you see the forest.

Kim will share her expert tips and surprising tricks to help you confidently identify Virginia’s trees, even in the heart of winter. The walk takes place on Buck Lick Trail which is an easy, family-friendly trail that covers less than half a mile on gentle terrain—perfect for all experience levels. Make sure to dress warmly and wear closed-toed shoes.
