Did you know the Shenandoah Valley began forming around 300 million years ago during a massive continental collision known as the Alleghenian Orogeny? Back then, the landscape looked very different—what is now a winding river was once covered by ancient oceans. Thanks to the rock cycle, that dramatic transformation shaped the valley we see today.
Join us for a guided hike along the Bluebell Trail, where we’ll explore the rock cycle in action. Along the way, we’ll observe real-life examples of erosion and weathering and discuss how rocks and minerals have played a vital role in the lives of people in the Shenandoah Valley for over 10,000 years.
This hike will be about 1 mile on easy terrain. The Bluebell Trail is a natural surface hiking trail with exposed rocks and roots.
