River Cane Restoration - Harvest Day
River cane, also known as giant cane (
Arundinaria gigantea), is a keystone species. In Virginia, this plant provides amazing habitat for cane feeding moths and song birds, stabilizes streambanks, absorbs excess nitrogen running off into water ways, and provides a buffer against invasive species. Restoring river cane to part of its former range is a growing priority region-wide. DNH leads an annual river cane restoration project which continues to make a positive impact on our area and the surrounding states. Participants will learn more about the importance of river cane and the former extent of canebrakes and will get to help start new cane plants that will eventually be used to restore canebrake habitat. This is a very accessible project with different jobs for folks of all ability levels. Come give back and put your hands in a project that has a major positive impact on the world.

Clothing: Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy and comfortable shoes.
Supplies: Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and hand pruners if you have them. Shovels, gloves, and pruners will be provided.
Participants should be able to:
- Understand and follow directions to avoid/manage risks.
- Tolerate the elements including temperature for the duration.
- Traverse unpaved and uneven trails.
