Wintertime at Pocahontas State Park
Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside this winter. Not only is getting outside good for your physical and mental health, but there are exciting programs and activities waiting for you to discover at a Virginia State Park, especially Pocahontas State Park.

While the cold weather will limit water adventures, there is still plenty to do around the park both indoors and outdoors. Be sure to always check the park’s Know Before You Go page before visiting, especially during winter weather.
Self-guided activities
If you prefer a solo adventure, Pocahontas State Park offers a variety of self-guided activities you can enjoy on your own or with a small group.

For those with young children, the Pocahontas State Park Jr. Ranger Book (PDF) is perfect for kids age 12 and under and offers cool rewards upon completion. This is a fun and engaging way to explore the park while learning about the flora and fauna as wells as many other things.
Interested in a mental activity? The Civilian Conservation Corps Word Search (PDF) is a great way to spend some time flexing your brain muscles while learning a bit about the contributions made to create this park. Be sure to visit the park’s CCC Museum to see artifacts and read stories about those who enjoyed the land and helped it become the park you see today. Museum hours vary seasonally, so call the park for more information at 804-796-4255.

The Pocahontas self-guided activity booklet (PDF) provides you with tools to explore the trails and learn more about the trees around you during your hike. You will also learn more about nature and the park habitats.
Enjoy the Virginia State Parks sensory activity where your senses come to life and help you connect with nature through a variety of activities. What can you see, hear, feel or smell? This activity is fun for all ages.

Winter Hikes
Hiking is a great way to get some exercise and explore the park’s trails. The park offers Sunday Strolls in February, providing guests with the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll along a scenic trail. Bring your curiosity, your walking shoes, and enjoy a peaceful start to your Sunday in nature. Please call 804-796-4472 or email Rebecca.Whalen@dcr.virginia.gov for more information.

Trail tales is a fun way to read and hike. Start your adventure at the CCC Museum, then enjoy a short, stroller-friendly trail (less than a mile) where the story unfolds page by page. Perfect for all ages. When you finish, stop by the Visitor Center and share your journey with our rangers.

Want something fun to do with your dog? The B.A.R.K. Ranger hike is a great way to show off your dog’s park etiquette and get rewarded for doing so. The program emphasizes the Leave No Trace Principles while allowing you and your dog to bond outdoors.

Fun Programs
Watch your little ones grow with the Caterpillar Club. Each week, explore nature together through fun, hands-on activities designed for ages 3–5 (but can be fun for the whole family). Aligned with Virginia’s Blocks for Early Learning.
Whether you are a fan of snakes or not, the Hugs and Hisses program is a great way to learn about these creatures. Snakes are some of the most misunderstood animals in the wild. In this interactive program, you’ll explore their unique behaviors, discover why they’re so important to our environment and bust a few myths along the way. Plus, you’ll have the chance to meet a real snake up close—if you are feeling brave.
On Valentines Day, the park is hosting a Cupid’s Arrow Archery program hosted by the Let’s Go Adventures Team. All equipment is provided. This program is up to two hours long and is limited to 20 participants. The age requirement is 10+ years old and reservations are required. Call 804-796-4472 or email parksletsgo@dcr.virginia.gov to reserve your spot.

If you are looking to meet new people, enjoy a hike, and make a craft, the Cupid’s Carabiners program is perfect for you. It is also on Feb. 14, but in the afternoon and allows you to customize a carabiner with Cupid and take a short ranger-led hike to learn more about the park and your fellow carabiner crafters. This program is intended for adults 18 and older. The trail is an easy-moderate 0.7-mile loop from the Visitor Center.

Wintertime is perfect for stargazing, and the park offers a Skywatch program that gives you the opportunity join the Richmond Astronomical Society for an unforgettable night under the stars. Peer through powerful telescopes to see the Moon’s craters, Jupiter’s dazzling bands and the breathtaking Orion Nebula. Chat with passionate astronomers, learn about constellations and even bring your own telescope or binoculars for expert tips.
Visit the park’s events page for the full list of upcoming events.
